By Robert Middleton - Action Plan Marketing

I remember getting an email several years ago from a woman who had been in one of my programs.

One of her goals was to launch a regular email newsletter (e-zine), and after a lot of preparation, writing, and technical machinations, she was finally ready.

In her email she said, "I was shaking as I took the final step of pressing the button to send out my first e-zine to my list."

That may not sound like a big deal, but I want to acknowledge her and all the others who commit to a plan and take action - despite their fears and doubts.

That's courage; that's boldness.

In marketing every time we put something out there, an e-zine, a new website, a new promotion, there's a risk it won't work.

Every time we follow-up with someone we just met at a networking event, there's a risk we might get rejected.

As our marketing confidence grows and we implement bigger, more complex marketing strategies, that risk of failure and rejection are still there, looming as large as ever.

But if we try to play it safe, wait for prospects to call us, avoid writing that controversial article, put off contacting conferences to give presentations, and keep delaying writing the first chapter of your book, something will happen worse than failure or rejection.

Mediocrity.

I've read many times that when it comes to the end of their lives, people rarely regret the things they've done, but the things they haven't done.

As an Independent Professional, will you make a mark in the world that changes lives or will you just struggle to make the mortgage payment?

Will you take on a huge, impossible project that takes every ounce of intelligence, and resourcefulness you can muster or will you simply wait until circumstances are better?

When will you do that thing you've always wanted to do but delayed because you didn't have enough education, money, connections, or a good enough economy?

Think, right now, what is that thing?

And if say, "I'll think about it," it's already too late.

But if you know what it is, write it down and take just one small action in the direction of its fulfillment right this very minute.

Or as our friend Goethe says:

"Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

Cheers, Robert

Hi Robert. Long time no talk! Last year I had a very direct conversation with a strategic partner who was not holding up his end of our relationship. I have always struggled with speaking directly with people when I have issues. I guess my fear of rejection or the potential for the loss of the relationship always held me back. But although my stomach was in knots the entire time, I had the hard conversation with him and in the end, he told me everything I said was valid and I had every right to feel as I did. Not only was it extremely empowering for me, but it actually improved our relationship. Since then I've had more direct conversations with people, and each time those relationships have improved. I encourage everyone out there who suffers with the same issue, to step out and give it a shot. It won't be easy and might not be perfect, but it does get easier, not to mention how great you will feel not holding everything in and expecting people to figure out what you need.

Such a great example, Cheryl. If you compare what it was like before communicating that vs. what it was like after you communicated it, it's like night and day. Certain things naturally upset us and one of those is undelivered communications. When you take the bold action to communicate, your life changes. Imagine that!

Robert, an excellent post. Really inspiring. Your post this week really resonated, as it kept hitting home with the points about ...mediocrity, playing small, making my mark in the world or struggling to make the mortgage payment. I decided this year - well the end of last year to write my ezine monthly and so far I have a newsletter plan for the year - a first . Your post has encouraged me to go on and dispel those thoughts that run around in my head as to why I should not write. Thank you

Hi Robert - thanks for the 'swift kick in the keister'.

Actually your note is well timed, but I'm one day ahead of you as yesterday I started putting together a new course for the segment of my audience that would prefer to DIY instead of hiring me to expertly set up their Google Places listing for them.

Created the mindmap last week, started on the PPT slides yesterday and will be recording the videos before weeks end. I have to, as my first webinar to promote the new course is is already scheduled...

The boldest step I took, necessary to launch my business of resume writing, was quitting a well-paying, benefit-rich (retirement fund too) job. I didn't enjoy the work as it was not a job that required the talents I had; it was a job that required talents I didn't possess, but got fairly proficient at. I committed to a full-time business right away, as I knew that a half-hearted, part-time gig wouldn't work (I've seen too many try that, only to say that there's no way the work would ever go full-time). I've now added public speaking, article-writing, job fair resource and all sorts of extras to my role. I love it! I'm challenged, working to my strengths, get to step outside my comfort zone regularly ... love my work and have the very best clients. It's not easy. It's hard, hard work, but so rewarding!
