Books on Positioning Your Services

Positioning - Finding Your Uniqueness

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind - Al Ries and Jack Trout - This classic on marketing should be read, studied and heeded by all business people. It gets to the heart of what it takes to differentiate your business from all others. A classic and fun to read. Positioning is also important because it was the first book to really talk about positioning, something marketers take for granted now. But there's nothing like going back to the source material. Through clear explanations and examples you'll understand what it takes to make a product or service stand out and gain a "share of mind" in the marketplace.

I also like the other Ries and Trout Books following and Trout's "New Positioning." All strongly recommended to the serious marketer.

Marketing Warfare
Bottom-Up Marketing
22 Immutable Laws of Marketing
The New Positioning
FOCUS - The Future of Your Company Depends Upon It

Rapid Response Advertising - Geoff Ayling - PB $24.47 - A brilliant marketing book on how to effectively position your services (whether you do advertising or not). What A Great Book!! This is a must-read for any business owner who wants to communicate more powerfully. More than just a book on advertising, it gets at the heart of creating compelling marketing messages that get attention, interest and action. What's great about it is the research and science to it, the great examples, the way he builds on the work of the greatest marketing geniuses and the brisk, easy-to-follow writing style. You'll have a hard time putting it down. A winner on every level! A must-read and the one worthy follow-up to Positioning.

Jump Start Your Business Brain - Doug Hall - HC - $17.49 - A extraordinarily clear and exciting book about your Core Marketing Message. Doug hall has repackaged the concept of your USP (Unique Selling Proposition) in a very powerful and persuasive way. He asserts that the way you formulate and express three things - Your Overt Benefit, Reason to Believe and Dramatic Difference makes all the difference whether your product or service is successful or not. Primarily focused on products, this formula is still very useful for services. Hall will convince you once and for all that your message not only matters but is the key to marketing success. And then he gives you the tools to build that message. Excellent on all counts.

Nichecraft - Lynda Falkenstein - This book does for small businesses what the Trout and Ries books did for corporations. Read Positioning and Focus (to the left) for principles. Read Nichecraft for a 9-step process for creating a powerful marketing niche. An excellent, well conceived book that might well be the first book you should read before you try to promote your services.
